This performance is a rebroadcast of the Brick Presbyterian Church’s 2018 Good Friday service, originally live-streamed on March 30, 2018. Tune in at 12:15pm EDT.
A Good Friday tradition at The Brick Presbyterian Church for almost a century, Sir John Stainer's Lenten choral meditation The Crucifixion will be performed by the professional choir of the Brick Church, including soloists Jeremy Little and Nathaniel Sullivan, on Friday, March 30, 2018, at 12:15pm. Keith S. Tóth will conduct, and British concert organist Alistair Reid will provide the accompaniment on Brick Church's acclaimed Anderson organ.
Premiered in 1887, The Crucifixion is a fixture of the English choral tradition. Musicians today still enjoy performing choruses such as "Fling wide the gates," and careers have been founded on The Crucifixion's baritone and tenor solos. The chorus "God so loved the world" enjoys an independent existence as an anthem in parish choirs across the globe—a minor classic in its own right and a beautifully expressive piece of choral writing.
